CompScience VMS Quick Start Guide

Introduction

The CompScience VMS is a secure, zero-configuration video gateway that connects your existing camera network to the CompScience analytics platform. Once connected, it automatically discovers cameras on your local network and manages video exports on your schedule.

What’s in the Box

    • CompScience VMS device
    • Power adapter
    • Ethernet cable

Key Features

  • Fully managed by CompScience
  • Zero configuration required
  • Secure connection, no new ports opened
  • Minimal IT involvement

Setup Instructions

  1. Connect to Network
    • Plug the included Ethernet cable from the VMS to your router or switch.
  2. Power On
    • Connect the power adapter and switch on the device.
  3. Automatic Connection
    • The VMS will connect securely to CompScience infrastructure. No additional IT setup is required.
  4. Camera Discovery
    • The VMS scans the network and automatically identifies compatible cameras.
    • If cameras are on a different subnet, provide the IP addresses to CompScience by contacting your Customer Support Engineer or emailing devicecare@compscience.com
  5. Credential Setup
    • CompScience will contact you to obtain the camera usernames and passwords to enable camera connection.

System Requirements
Before you begin, ensure the following:

  • Camera access: You will need the camera login and password (RTSP credentials).
  • Network: Cameras must be on the same subnet as the VMS for automatic discovery.
    • If cameras are on another subnet, provide their IP addresses manually.
  • Camera compatibility:
    • Cameras must support RTSP streaming and have it enabled.
    • Very old or battery-powered cameras may not support RTSP. Confirm camera model if unsure.
  • Firewall / IT settings:
    • Allow outbound TCP and UDP traffic to *.viam.com, *.viam.cloud, and *.compscience.com, especially ports 443 and 3478.

Tip: Coordinate with your IT team for camera credentials and network/firewall checks.

Scheduling Video Export

    • You define the time windows when video should be exported.
    • To adjust or restrict export schedules, send a request to your Customer Support Engineer or devicecare@compscience.com
    • The VMS can schedule export uploads during off-peak hours so business operations are not interrupted.
